Offering Group Supervision for Psychotherapists, Counsellors and Mental Health Workers in Seaforth, Sydney's Northern Beaches, and Online across the world.

Being a counsellor or psychotherapist can sometimes feel stressful and isolating as we can feel that we are holding our clients’ stories in our own hands and are solely responsible for their wellbeing. Opportunities to share, discuss and receive feedback about the work we are doing are not always readily available with people we feel aligned to.

In my group supervision sessions, I make space for each participant to present anything related to their work and encourage everyone in the group to offer anything that they may receive that is relevant to what has been presented. There is a richness because of the diversity of training and experience of the different practitioners as well as their different ways of languaging their work and ideas. Often we bounce off each other, going deeper and broader and enriching the insights and realisations in relation to the client’s (and the supervisees’)  dilemmas.

There may be someone in the group who has grappled with a similar issue involving, ethics, transference, counter-transference, projection, diversity, legality, cultural, religious or family considerations and they can offer excellent support and expertise to the clinician who is presenting a topic. The participant who has had a similar experience can normalise the counter-transference of the clinician and also support them with their emotions and reactions.

The Practice of Group Supervision

Group supervision often leaves the clinician feeling supported, connected, relieved and confident to bring new interventions or directions to their therapy.

Participants have said that they feel less alone and that the emotional impact of clinical work is less intense.

The group also share resources, often posting links to articles or presentations that are relevant to what is being presented.  They may also share a particular technique or intervention that was supportive for them in the past and this might then be role-played and practiced in the group setting. As the groups are a mix of clinicians working in an agency or corporate setting together with those in private practice, due consideration is given to the organisational context of each participant.

As the facilitator of such groups I take care to balance the welcome, fruitful contributions of all participants with the job of moderating what is shared for relevance and integrity. We are working together to create a safe, warm, supportive and expansive space in which to explore and examine our practice. As the sense of safety and collaboration is established, there is an openness and transparency among the participants where we are receptive to feedback and to to trying new ideas and practicing with each other.

Group supervision is cost-effective as the rate is less than half the cost of individual supervision and groups are limited to five participants.
